BRonchoscopy at Initial sarcoidosis diagnosis Targeting longitudinal Endpoints (BRITE study) |
Sarcoidosis is a disease that causes inflammation in the lungs, and this inflammation involves the activity of certain white blood cells called lymphocytes that accumulate in the lung and cause granulomas to form. The reasons why some patients with sarcoidosis experience many years of active disease while others only experience very mild disease remain unknown.
The goal of this research study is to learn how lymphocytes control the inflammation in sarcoidosis, and whether this control is the reason why different patients experience different medical results with this disease. A better understanding of lymphocytes could result in new ways to identify progressive versus non-progressive disease and lead to new treatments by steering the activity of these cells towards disease resolution.

BRITE study quick facts:
The following information and samples will be collected:
- Medical History
- Questionnaires
- Pulmonary function tests (breathing tests to measure how well your lungs work)
- Chest x-ray
- Blood sample: white blood cells (lymphocytes) from the blood will be used to study your immune system in detail.
- Bronchoscopy with lavage: this is a common medical procedure for obtaining samples from the lung. White blood cells (lymphocytes) from the lung will be isolated to study the activity of the immune system specifically in the lungs.
Criteria that make you able to participate in this trial include:
- Adult male and female patients, between 18 and 80 of age.
- Have been recently diagnosed with sarcoidosis within the past 18 months.
- Have not been treated with prednisone or other medications for sarcoidosis in the past 1 month.
- Able to travel to and from one of the 4 BRITE study locations.
Criteria that may not allow you to participate include:
- Current or planned pregnancy during your participation in the research study.
- Active smoking (including marijuana) or having quit smoking less than 6 months ago.
- Severe lung disease, including needing oxygen at home.
- Sarcoidosis involving the brain or heart.
- Recent history of cardiovascular disease such as a heart attack within the past 3 months.
- Previous history of complications from bronchoscopy procedure.
